Controversy Brews as Tinubu-led Government Invites Gumi Over Banditry Comments

The Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has stated that it has invited Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, for questioning regarding his remarks on the activities of bandits in the country.

Minister of Information and Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known while speaking to journalists at the State House, Abuja, on Monday. Idris emphasized that Gumi, despite his stature, is not above the law, hence the decision to invite him.

Gumi’s comments, reported by SaharaReporters on March 21, suggested that the Nigerian government should adopt the same amnesty approach used in the Niger-Delta region to tackle banditry. He highlighted the military’s harsh tactics, including airstrikes that targeted bandits’ families, as a factor fuelling the conflict.

Speaking on Daily Trust’s X Space conversation, Gumi advocated for a non-kinetic approach, emphasizing negotiation and socio-economic methods over military action. He compared the situation to the Niger-Delta crisis, where granting amnesty to militants helped restore peace.

Gumi’s visits to bandits in the forests to negotiate the release of victims have sparked controversy. He has drawn parallels between the bandits’ actions and those of Niger-Delta militants, citing economic grievances and the need for a peaceful resolution.

The invitation of Gumi by the government reflects its stance on addressing comments that could incite or worsen the security situation in the country. It also highlights the complex nature of the security challenges Nigeria faces, requiring a multifaceted approach for resolution.
