The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has made a bold statement, declaring his willingness to resign if former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is not prosecuted. Speaking to editors at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja, Olukoyede emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Bello’s prosecution is pursued to its conclusion, promising that anyone who obstructed the former governor’s arrest would face justice.

The EFCC is seeking to arraign Bello on 19 counts related to alleged money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds amounting to N80.2 billion. Olukoyede stressed that despite any challenges or attacks against the EFCC, he and his team remain steadfast in their mission to combat corruption and cleanse the nation.

Highlighting the importance of public support, Olukoyede emphasized that the success of the EFCC is crucial for Nigeria’s well-being, noting that the agency’s efforts have positively impacted the value of the naira and the foreign exchange market.

The absence of Bello from court for his arraignment prompted Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja to issue an order. Citing the Administrative and Criminal Justice Act 2015, the judge directed Bello’s legal counsel to receive a copy of the charges against him, as personal service was not possible. Justice Nwite reiterated that Bello’s failure to appear in court for arraignment was evident.

In summary, Olukoyede’s firm stance underscores the EFCC’s determination to uphold the rule of law and combat corruption, with Bello’s case representing a significant test of the agency’s resolve. The court’s order further emphasizes the seriousness of the allegations against Bello and the imperative of legal proceedings to ensure accountability.
