Govt extends search for fleeing 4,000 inmates to IDP camps

The Nigeria Correctional Service is intensifying efforts to recapture inmates who escaped from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State due to a rainstorm damaging the facility. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, pledged to relocate overcrowded correctional centres to improve infrastructure and security

Despite efforts, recurring jailbreaks highlight the poor state of Nigeria’s prisons, attributed to inadequate infrastructure, overcrowding, and deteriorating facilities. Security experts emphasize the urgent need for government action, including rehabilitating prison infrastructure, enhancing security measures, and promoting inmate rehabilitation programs to prevent future jailbreaks and ensure public safety.
