In 2022, Adamu Tafawa Balewa College of Education (COE) Kangere in Bauchi state attracted over 1000 hopeful applicants eager to enroll in its degree programs affiliated with Bayero University Kano (BUK). These applicants, fueled by aspirations for higher education, invested both financially and emotionally, paying application fees and JAMB fees totaling thousands of Naira. However, two years later, many find themselves in a state of disappointment and uncertainty as the promised programs have yet to commence.

Maryam, one of the affected applicants, expressed her dashed hopes, lamenting the delay in program commencement. Similarly, Yusuf voiced frustration at the lack of communication and alternatives provided to the applicants. Musa Abdullahi, another hopeful student, described how he invested time and resources into the opportunity, only to feel his dreams slipping away as the wait continues.

The delay has left many applicants questioning the college’s accountability and the reasons behind the prolonged postponement. Despite assurances of quality education and timely program initiation, the reality of the situation has led to frustration and hopelessness among the applicants, with their futures hanging in uncertainty.

Parents and local leaders, angered by the college’s handling of the situation, demand answers and accountability from the authorities. They criticize the college for collecting fees from applicants without fulfilling its promises.

According to an unnamed staff member, the delay stems from the college’s failure to meet certain regulatory requirements. While the necessary resources have now been acquired, the start of the program awaits approval from BUK.

Inquiries to the college authorities yielded promises of progress but provided little clarity on the situation. Umar Chadi, a college staff member, mentioned that they are in the final stages of preparation and await approval from the NUC. Bala Baban Kawu, the college spokesperson, promised to provide more information but cited ongoing exams as a reason for delay.

With each passing week, the applicants’ hopes diminish as they remain stranded without updates or concrete plans for the future. Despite assurances from the college, the lack of transparency and communication has left many feeling abandoned and uncertain about their educational pursuits.
