Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has announced the Federal Government’s plan to establish a committee aimed at addressing power blackouts in various parts of Nigeria. The decision follows a meeting with Electricity Distribution and Generation Companies in Abuja, where Adelabu expressed the need for collaborative efforts to tackle the challenges facing the power sector.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Adelabu highlighted the importance of resolving the issues causing power blackouts to ensure a more reliable and consistent power supply for Nigerian citizens. He noted that while power supply improved during the yuletide season, setbacks were experienced in the New Year, mainly due to low gas supply to power Generating Companies (GenCos).

To gain firsthand understanding of the challenges, Adelabu visited facilities in Olorunshogo, Ogun State, and Omotosho, Ondo State. He emphasized that resolving the issue of gas supply is a top priority for the Ministry of Power and outlined plans to initiate discussions with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources to prioritize gas supply to power.

Addressing the sector’s liquidity challenge, Adelabu stated that efforts are underway to validate debts owed to GenCos by the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET) and to establish contractual arrangements between GenCos and gas suppliers for a steady gas supply. He assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to stabilizing the power sector and acknowledged the need for concessions in addressing gas supply and liquidity challenges.

Adelabu reiterated the ministry’s unwavering commitment to addressing challenges affecting power supply and expressed appreciation for citizens’ patience as efforts are made towards achieving a brighter and more reliable energy future for Nigeria.
