President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has raised concerns over the broad stereotyping of Nigeria as a hub for cybercrime and corruption, emphasizing that such generalizations undermine the integrity of the majority of Nigerians who uphold principles of diligence.

During a Public Engagement on Youth, Religion, and the Fight Against Corruption, which included the Launch of Inter-Faith Manual and Fraud Risk Assessment Project for MDAs at Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, President Tinubu expressed regret that Nigerians have been associated with internet crimes without factual evidence, a narrative he believes contradicts the typical way of life of Nigerian citizens.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) organized the event, which brought together various stakeholders in the battle against economic and financial crimes.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu highlighted the misrepresentation of Nigerians over the years, emphasizing that it does not reflect the true essence of the nation. He noted that Nigerians are hardworking and honest citizens who contribute significantly to various fields globally, from Artificial Intelligence to medicine.

While rejecting blanket stereotyping, President Tinubu acknowledged the evolving nature of cybercrimes into a global phenomenon, posing a threat not only to Nigeria but to the entire world. He stressed the need for a concerted effort to combat these digital offenses.

In his address titled “Youth, Religion, and Our Battle Against Corruption: A Call to Action,” President Tinubu commended the EFCC for its role in awakening the nation’s conscience and confronting corruption. He assured the agency of the government’s support in tackling internet crimes and other forms of corruption.
