The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu over his recent private trip to France. Atiku, known for his active engagement on social media, expressed his concerns on his Twitter handle, @atiku, on Tuesday.

In his tweets, Atiku criticized Tinubu for embarking on a ‘private’ foreign trip at a time when Nigeria is facing severe security challenges, particularly in the nation’s capital, Abuja, and other parts of the country. He lamented the recent incidents of armed kidnapping, including the tragic killing of a nursing mother and grandmother in Abuja due to their inability to pay a ransom of N90 million, as well as the abduction of two monarchs in Ekiti State.

Atiku did not mince words in his criticism, stating, “Tinubu is playing fiddle while Nigeria is drowning in the ocean of insecurity.” He called for decisive action, suggesting that if the responsibilities of governance have proven too burdensome for President Tinubu, he should step aside. Atiku emphasized the urgent need for round-the-clock leadership to address the escalating insecurity and the country’s deteriorating economy.

These remarks from Atiku come at a time when the nation is grappling with various security challenges, from terrorism to banditry and kidnapping. His comments reflect growing concerns among Nigerians about the government’s ability to effectively tackle these issues and provide a safe and secure environment for citizens.

While some may view Atiku’s statements as a bold call for accountability and action, others might see them as a calculated move to gain political mileage ahead of the next election cycle. Regardless of the interpretation, Atiku’s words have sparked discussions about the state of governance and security in Nigeria, highlighting the pressing need for proactive measures to address these critical issues.

In response to Atiku’s remarks, supporters of President Tinubu have defended his actions, citing the need for leaders to take personal time for rest and rejuvenation. However, critics argue that the timing of Tinubu’s trip, amidst escalating insecurity, raises questions about his priorities and commitment to addressing the nation’s challenges.
