The House of Representatives is set to resume its legislative activities on Thursday, February 1, 2024, after its new year break, with a packed agenda that includes crucial bills and motions for debate. Among the bills slated for discussion is the proposal to establish a regulatory body for organ harvesting, transplanting, and donations, highlighting the growing importance of healthcare regulations in Nigeria.

Another significant item on the agenda is the Electoral Act Amendment bill, which has garnered widespread attention due to its potential impact on the country’s electoral processes. The bill aims to address various issues related to elections and voting procedures, reflecting the House’s commitment to enhancing the democratic process in Nigeria.

In addition to these key bills, the House will also consider other legislative proposals, including a bill to amend the Professional Bodies (Special Provision) Act of 2004. These bills, both from private members and the executive, underscore the diverse range of issues that the House is poised to address in the new legislative session.

Aside from legislative matters, the House will also deliberate on motions of urgent national importance raised by lawmakers. These motions cover a wide array of issues, including the need for decisive action against health facilities that refuse to treat accident or gunshot patients without police reports, the investigation of electricity supply distribution in Kebbi State, and the degradation of the natural ecosystem in Delta State, among others.

Furthermore, the House is set to address concerns regarding the breach of the Appropriation Act by government ministries, departments, and agencies in the execution of capital projects. This reflects the House’s oversight role in ensuring accountability and transparency in government spending.

However, amidst these pressing issues, the planned controversial relocation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) departments and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) headquarters to Lagos, which has sparked public debate, was not listed for discussion as a matter of urgent national importance. It remains to be seen whether this topic will be raised during the session.
