President Bola Tinubu is set to inaugurate a negotiation committee for a new national minimum wage, scheduled for tomorrow. In a letter, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, conveyed the President’s approval for the commencement of negotiations. The inauguration is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, State House, Abuja, starting at 12:00 noon.

Members are expected to be seated by 11:30 a.m., with a shuttle bus available at the pilot gate from 10:00 a.m. to convey members to the venue. For enquiries, members were advised to contact the Secretariat of the Committee in the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission or the Director, Compensation, at 0806 555 3550.

The announcement of the inauguration has been met with approval from labour centres, who see it as a welcome development. The committee, which was supposed to have been unveiled in November 2023 as agreed upon during a meeting with the Federal Government and labour unions on October 2, 2023, is being inaugurated three months before the expiration of the current minimum wage of N30,000.
