Former Ogun Speaker Oluomo Walks Out of Probe Panel Amid Impeachment Controversy

The former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, reportedly walked out on an eight-man panel set up to investigate allegations against him. Oluomo, representing Ifo I constituency, was impeached by 18 members of the assembly over allegations of gross misconduct, high-handedness, lack of transparency, poor leadership, financial misappropriation, and incitement of members against each other. The impeachment led to the election of Elemide Oludaisi as the new speaker.

Despite his impeachment, Oluomo has contested the process, claiming it did not follow due process. In response, the assembly reconvened and formed an eight-man committee to investigate the allegations against him. However, during the committee’s session, Oluomo allegedly objected to the panel’s composition, stating that all eight members were signatories to the impeachment notice against him. He also cited the matter’s involvement in a court case as a reason for his inability to respond to the committee’s questions.

The committee reportedly insisted on proceeding, citing a house rule that allows them to overlook such objections to fulfill their purpose. After a verbal exchange, Oluomo requested to leave, which the committee declined. Eventually, he walked out of the session, prompting the committee to continue its proceedings.

In a statement to the press, Oluomo expressed his intention to meet the matter in court, citing an upcoming court date on the seventh of February. The committee is expected to submit its report to the assembly for further deliberation and action.
