Nigerian College of Aviation Technology Lacks Helicopters for Training, After Some Had Been Sold to Private Individuals

The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria has been revealed to have no helicopters for training purposes, according to the Acting Rector of the institution, Shaka Imalighwe. This disclosure was made during an investigative hearing organized by the House of Representatives to probe the sale of two helicopters belonging to the College.

Imalighwe, who assumed the role of Acting Rector in January 2024, stated that despite being the Deputy Rector at the time the helicopters were sold, he was not part of the team or committee that facilitated the sale.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Assets, Ademorin Kuye, expressed concern over the sale of the helicopters to private individuals, leaving the College without any helicopters for training purposes. He questioned the process leading to the sale, especially since security agencies like the Nigerian Air Force, Navy, and Police had shown interest in purchasing the helicopters.

Despite the expressed interest from these security agencies, including written indications and visits to the College, the management denied them the opportunity to purchase the helicopters.

As a result of the hearing, the committee directed the immediate past and current Minister of Aviation to appear before them at the next investigative sitting. Additionally, representatives from the Ministry of Works, Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), and the immediate past and present rectors of the College have also been summoned to appear before the committee.
