The Dangote Foundation has initiated a significant philanthropic effort in Kano State, beginning the handover of 120,000 10kg bags of rice to support the needy on Saturday. Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the chairman of the foundation, disclosed plans to distribute a staggering one million bags of rice across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas, aiming to assist one million vulnerable individuals nationwide.

This act of generosity is described by Dangote as a manifestation of compassion, solidarity, and a core element of the foundation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives designed to alleviate hardship across the country. He highlighted that Kano State, due to its substantial population and high levels of poverty, would receive a significant portion of the aid.

Dangote’s objective is to broaden the scope of this initiative to encompass all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ensuring a wide distribution of aid. Concurrently, the foundation is conducting a daily feeding programme for 10,000 individuals and providing an additional 10,000 meals each evening to break the Ramadan fast within the Kano municipality.

Moreover, this philanthropic activity is accompanied by the distribution of 20,000 family-sized loaves of bread in Kano and 125,000 in Lagos, initiatives that have been ongoing since the COVID-19 pandemic. The foundation is also actively engaged in nutrition programmes, including investments in iodized salt and the fortification of sugar with Vitamin A.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State expressed his gratitude for this distribution, especially during Ramadan, acknowledging it as a significant contribution to feeding the vulnerable. He also extended his thanks to President Bola Tinubu for providing additional grain support to alleviate economic difficulties in the state.

Governor Yusuf mentioned that the distribution would be conducted by trusted members of Hisbah, ensuring transparency, fairness, and unbiased selection in the handover of these essential supplies. He further encouraged other affluent Nigerians to follow Dangote’s example by supporting those in need, emphasising that such gestures would bring blessings to the community from Allah.
