Labour Party Leadership Crisis Intensifies as Apapa Takes Case to Supreme Court

Lamidi Apapa remains steadfast in his bid to lead the Labour Party (LP) following the Court of Appeal in Abuja’s March 6, 2024 judgment affirming Julius Abure as the party’s Chairman. Despite this setback, Apapa’s spokesperson, Abayomi Arabambi, announced in Abeokuta that Apapa has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Appeal Court’s decision.

Arabambi revealed that Apapa has cited five grounds on which the Appeal Court’s judgment should be overturned. These grounds will be officially submitted once Apapa’s legal team obtains the certified true copy of the judgment.

According to Arabambi, Apapa’s appeal was filed on March 6, 2024, and a motion for stay of execution was filed on March 7, 2024, to halt the implementation of the judgment in favor of Julius Abure. He criticized the Appeal Court’s decision as “bizarre, disturbing, and corrupt.”

The leadership tussle between Abure and Apapa has been ongoing since the conclusion of the 2023 general election. Last year, a Federal Capital Territory High Court issued an ex-parte order directing Abure and two other national officers to cease acting as leaders of the party due to alleged document forgery. However, the appellate court overturned this verdict in a judgment delivered recently.

The appeal to the Supreme Court indicates that the battle for the leadership of the Labour Party is far from over, as both factions continue to pursue legal avenues to assert their claims. The outcome of this legal challenge could have significant implications for the future direction of the party.
