As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for its governorship primary election in Ondo State, aspirants are actively lobbying to secure the party’s candidacy. The list of contenders includes Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Olusola Oke, Isaac Kekemeke, Mayowa Akinfolarin, Wale Akinterinwa, Jimoh Ibrahim, Gbenga Edema, Dr Paul Akintelure, and Mr Jimi Odumayo. These aspirants are reportedly reaching out to influential figures in President Tinubu’s circle and the Presidency, including the first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the President’s daughter, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

Among the aspirants, Jimoh Ibrahim is said to be leveraging his relationship with President Tinubu, while Governor Aiyedatiwa is relying on the support he received from Umar Ganduje during a previous political crisis. However, Ganduje has reportedly indicated that the final decision on support lies with the President, creating uncertainty among the aspirants.

A source revealed that the party is considering a neutral candidate who was not involved in the state’s recent political crisis. Mr Mayowa Akinfolarin reportedly has the backing of Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, and Interior Minister, Mr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The Akeredolu family is said to be supporting Mr Wale Akinterinwa, a former Finance Commissioner of the state.

Despite his efforts, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s chances are considered slim due to his alleged violation of the 2023 Abuja Peace Accord and his relationship with former governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko. The President has reportedly scheduled a meeting with Ondo APC stakeholders in early April to discuss the party’s flag bearer for the November governorship election.

Responding to the situation, aspirant Mr Olugbenga Edema cautioned against dropping names of President Tinubu and the Presidency, stating that no endorsement has been made. He emphasized that the President would call a meeting if he intends to select a candidate, as was done during the state’s previous crisis over the deputy governor and acting governor.
