During the commissioning of the Geometric Power Plant in Aba, Abia State, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced that excess power from the plant would be used to bolster the national grid. Adelabu emphasized that the plant, with a capacity of 188MW, including 141MW currently operational, is not just for Abia State but for the benefit of all Nigerians.

The minister highlighted the unique nature of the project, which integrates Geometric Power Aba Limited and APL Electric Company Limited. Both companies are licensed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to generate and distribute electricity respectively within the Aba Ring Fenced Area, covering nine and 17 local government areas of Abia State.

Adelabu noted the significance of the project’s completion less than a year after he assumed office, attributing its success to the administration’s commitment to improving electricity supply. He also praised Professor Bart Nnaji, the founder and chairman of Geometric Power, for his contributions to the power sector.

Despite the project’s success, Adelabu expressed regret over the delays it faced, blaming the privatisation process of the power sector. He assured that the government would continue to support similar power projects in Nigeria to address the country’s power challenges.

Nigerians have long been grappling with inadequate power supply, and the commissioning of the Aba power plant is expected to alleviate some of these challenges. Adelabu’s announcement signals a step towards improving the country’s power infrastructure and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply for all citizens.
