Nigeria Set for Major Public Sector Reforms as Tinubu Orders Full Implementation of Oronsaye Report

President Bola Tinubu has directed the full implementation of the Oronsaye report, a landmark document that recommends reforms within Nigeria’s public sector. The report, commissioned in 2012, identified 541 federal government entities, including statutory and non-statutory parastatals, commissions, and agencies.

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information, announced the President’s decision following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) session on Monday. Tinubu’s directive aims to streamline government operations, reduce redundancy, and cut costs.

According to Idris, the implementation of the Oronsaye report will involve the dissolution, merger, or reorganization of various agencies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. The move reflects Tinubu’s commitment to making bold decisions in the interest of Nigeria.

The Oronsaye report, submitted to the Jonathan administration in 2012, was not fully implemented by successive governments. In 2014, the Jonathan government released a white paper on the report, and the Buhari administration issued a second white paper in August 2022, but the reforms were not enacted.

The Tinubu administration has decided to tackle the issue of high governance costs by implementing key recommendations of the Oronsaye report. An eight-man committee has been tasked with ensuring that the necessary legislative amendments and administrative restructuring are carried out efficiently within a 12-week deadline.

By implication, several federal agencies will undergo changes, including being scrapped, merged, or relocated. A committee headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will work out the modalities for implementation.
