The Nigeria Customs Service has halted the sale of seized food items to Nigerians following a tragic stampede at its Old Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos State, on Friday, which resulted in loss of lives. The decision, announced by Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada on Monday, comes after the service had previously announced plans to dispose of the seized food items to alleviate hardship in the country.

In a statement, Customs stated, “Considering the recent unfortunate event, we regrettably announce the suspension of this exercise until we establish what transpired on Friday, 23 February 2024.” The service aims to conduct a thorough investigation before resuming the sale of seized food items to ensure such incidents do not recur.

The suspension of the sale of seized food items is intended to allow Customs to develop a more comprehensive and robust plan that aligns with its noble intention of helping alleviate hardship in the country.
