Direct Entry Admissions for 155 Institutions in Jeopardy

Recent findings indicate that students from approximately 155 institutions may face challenges processing their Direct Entry (DE) admissions due to failed verification from their certificate-awarding institutions. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is set to commence registration for DE examinations on February 28, 2024.

In February 2023, JAMB issued an advisory to guide candidates seeking admissions through DE for the 2023/2024 academic session. The advisory aimed to tackle the issue of candidates using unacceptable or forged A-level certificates/qualifications to gain admission.

JAMB advised candidates to promptly contact their former institutions to verify their certificates, emphasizing that unverified certificates would not be accepted. While some institutions positively responded to JAMB’s request for verification, others have not, potentially jeopardizing the admissions of students from these institutions.

A memo from JAMB to some institutions in Abuja highlighted the need for verification, stating, “The Board had introduced measures to address tricks and sharp practices by candidates using unacceptable or forged A’ level certificates/qualifications to gain admission. One of the measures was verification of the claimed qualifications with the awarding bodies/institutions.”

Despite efforts by JAMB to verify claimed certificates, approximately 2,795 certificates from 155 institutions remain unverified. This situation underscores the importance of ensuring the authenticity of qualifications presented for admission to tertiary institutions.
