The All Progressive Congress (APC) suffered a significant setback in Kano as several Local Council chairmen elected under its banner abandoned the party for the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the state. The defection took place during a ceremony at Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, where the defectors renounced their loyalty to APC and its leader, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the immediate-past Governor of Kano State.

The ceremony, attended by Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam, NNPP state Chairman, and other party officials, saw the defectors adorned with the Kwankwasiyya Red-laced-with-white-cap symbol. Among the defectors were Hon. Ado Tambai Kwa, Chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local council, and his Deputy, Hon. Garba Yahaya Labour, as well as other councillors from Ganduje’s home council. Hon. Kwa, whose constituency is the home of Dr. Ganduje, made the move to NNPP along with his deputy and other councillors.

Additionally, Hon. Auwalu Lawan Aramposu, chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Council and a strong loyalist of the APC gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general elections, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, also defected to NNPP. Hon. Mudassiru Aliyu, member of APC and Chairman of Garun-Malam Local Government Council, also joined NNPP.

Governor Yusuf welcomed the defectors and their supporters, expressing his excitement over their decision to leave their former party and join NNPP. He assured them of fair treatment in NNPP and emphasized the state government’s commitment to enhancing socio-economic development through investments in education, health, agriculture, water resources, and human empowerment.

He stated, “We are fortunate that some of you have recognized our leadership style and decided to join us in our mission to make Kano great. You are warmly welcomed.”
