President Bola Tinubu has expressed disappointment with university lecturers for criticizing the students’ loan scheme instead of providing constructive advice on its management within their respective institutions. He emphasized that the government remains committed to maintaining a high standard of education and will not be deterred by such criticisms.

Speaking at the 8th convocation ceremony of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), President Tinubu, represented by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, described his administration as responsive to feedback from stakeholders in the education sector. He cited the recent cancellation of the policy of automatic deduction of 40% universities’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) as an example of the government’s willingness to listen and make necessary adjustments.

Regarding the Student Loan Scheme introduced in June 2023, President Tinubu expressed surprise at the negative response it received, emphasizing that education is a significant investment and should not be compromised. He defended the scheme as a means to provide access to education for those who value it, alleviating the financial burden on individuals and communities.

President Tinubu criticized scholars for not offering constructive advice on how to improve the management of the loan scheme in their institutions, instead of criticizing it outright. He assured stakeholders in the education sector of more interventions, some of which may be challenging but ultimately beneficial.

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji urged universities to prioritize research aimed at addressing the nation’s critical challenges and producing graduates capable of providing solutions. He emphasized the need for practical skills and real-world experience through hands-on learning and industry partnerships.

The Chancellor of FUOYE and Attah of Igala, Matthew Opaluwa Oguche, echoed the call for increased funding for universities to fulfill their roles more effectively.
