Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party have attributed the surge in kidnappings and insecurity in Nigeria to the worsening hunger and poverty experienced under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

In a series of statements, both politicians condemned the escalating incidents of kidnapping and insecurity, particularly in Abuja, the nation’s capital. Atiku Abubakar highlighted the tragic death of Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, a student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who was kidnapped alongside her family. He also mentioned the recent abduction of ten people, including a 13-year-old student, from Sagari Estate Layout in Dutse, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Similarly, Peter Obi expressed concern over the state of insecurity in Abuja, emphasizing that it reflects the broader insecurity issues faced by the entire country. He described Nabeeha’s killing as a tragic example of the rampant insecurity plaguing Nigeria and the helplessness felt by its citizens.

The public has condemned Nabeeha’s killing and urged security agencies to take decisive action to secure the release of other hostages held by bandits. Amnesty International has also raised alarm over the widespread kidnappings for ransom in Nigeria, describing kidnapping as a daily threat that has left citizens living in fear.

In response to these concerns, Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, assured the public that security agencies are actively working to address the issue. He cited the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egetokun, who affirmed that the security forces are making efforts to combat kidnappings across Nigeria.
