The Commissioner for Public Complaints Commission (PCC) representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon Ezekiel Musa Dalhatu, has expressed concerns about the level of insecurity in the nation’s capital, stating that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike may not be fully briefed on the situation.

During a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Dalhatu highlighted that insecurity in the FCT has reached an alarming level, with what initially appeared to be communal clashes escalating into organized criminal activities.

He noted that the commission under his office has received numerous complaints from individuals and groups, including the Abuja Original Inhabitants Youths Empowerment Organization, regarding frequent cases of killings and abductions by bandits.

According to Dalhatu, the increasing incidents of kidnapping in the FCT pose a significant threat to peace and businesses in the region. He mentioned that residents in various area councils, including Abaji, Kwali, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Bwari, are living in fear due to the prevalence of banditry and kidnapping.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Dalhatu stated that 176 people were reportedly abducted by bandits across Kuje, Kwali, and Bwari area councils within a two-month period.

While acknowledging the efforts of security agencies, Dalhatu also pointed out their operational challenges, including manpower shortages, inadequate equipment, and irregular payment of operational allowances.

In response to the security challenges, Dalhatu suggested the need for alternative strategies to combat kidnapping and banditry, as he noted that criminals are familiar with the existing security approaches.

Additionally, he advocated for the empowerment of local vigilantes in the six area councils, citing the willingness of young people in rural communities to defend their areas. He called on the FCT minister to declare a state of emergency on security to address the escalating situation effectively.
