Members of the Third Republic House of Representatives (1992-1993) convened at the House of Representatives Press Centre on Wednesday, making a fervent plea to the federal government for the settlement of long-standing salary and allowance arrears owed to them.

This assembly, comprising 593 legislators elected in 1992, has been persistently seeking their rightful entitlements for several years.

Amina Aliyu, speaking on behalf of the ex-lawmakers, revealed the challenges faced by the class of 1993, with approximately half of them having passed away and the remainder grappling with health issues and other adversities.

She highlighted the urgency of their situation, referring to some as being “half dead” with their “engines knocked.”

In a poignant appeal, Aliyu called upon President Bola Tinubu, a fellow Third Republic Senate member, to expedite the payment of their long-overdue allowances and entitlements.

Basil Okafor, another former member, shed light on the outstanding issues, emphasizing the government’s owed salaries from the period of their service.

Health concerns and unpaid claims further compound the challenges faced by these ex-lawmakers. Okafor expressed the group’s plea for government intervention in resolving these matters.

Fred Agbedi, a current member of the 10th House who also served in the Third Republic, echoed the call for justice.

He urged the National Assembly to address the longstanding issue, emphasizing the need for recognition and payment of salaries and allowances that were abruptly halted due to the military intervention during the Third Republic.
