President Bola Tinubu and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz played witness to the signing of an accelerated performance agreement during the ongoing 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, in Dubai.

The agreement pertains to the Siemens power project in Nigeria and was signed by Kenny Anuwe, Managing Director of FGN Power Company, representing Nigeria, and Nadja Haakansson, Siemens Energy’s Senior Vice-President and Managing Director for Africa, on behalf of the German company.

Following the signing, Anuwe expressed the effectiveness of Siemens Energy in delivering crucial equipment worth over 63 million Euros to Nigeria since the project’s initiation.

This includes mobile substations, transformers, and other equipment currently being installed at various sites.

The Dubai agreement aims to expedite the implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), formerly known as the Nigeria Electrification Roadmap Initiative, designed to enhance Nigeria’s electricity supply.

The initiative originated from a visit by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Abuja in August 2018, leading to a 2019 agreement between the governments of Nigeria and Germany to improve the power sector.

Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, highlighted Tinubu’s advocacy for the accelerated realization and expansion of the PPI since assuming office.

The Dubai agreement is expected to facilitate the modernization and expansion of Nigeria’s electric power transmission grid, ensuring the supply, delivery, and installation of Siemens-manufactured equipment within 18 to 24 months.

Additionally, the project will focus on technology transfer, training of Nigerian engineers at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the execution of new substations and transmission lines to connect load centres nationwide.

The emphasis will be on economic and industrial hubs, promoting project sustainability and maintenance.
