The Governor of Ekiti State, Abayomi Oyebanji, has expressed concern over the low turnout observed during the state’s local government election, indicating the need for more efforts in sensitizing and mobilizing the electorate.

Governor Oyebanji, who cast his vote in Ikogosi Ekiti, conveyed his appreciation to the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) for their commendable efforts in organizing a seamless election. He also thanked the people of Ekiti State for their active participation and commitment to peaceful coexistence, emphasizing the collaborative effort to keep Ekiti working.

Despite the absence of violence, the election, which spanned across the 16 local governments and 22 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), suffered from the usual apathy that characterizes local government elections in the past.

The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Adeoye Aribasoye, echoed the need for continued emphasis on the significance of participating in local government elections, emphasizing their role in grassroots governance.

However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest, represented by spokesperson Sanya Atoforati, affirmed the party’s decision not to participate in the poll.

Atoforati accused the electoral umpire and the ruling party APC of compromising the process, leading to the PDP’s withdrawal.
