The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has committed to taking decisive actions to bring an end to the persistent strikes plaguing Nigerian universities.

Abubakar Fulata, the committee’s Chairman, conveyed this assurance during a meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday with the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission and vice-chancellors of federal universities.

Fulata emphasized the significance of the meeting, citing the new government, assembly, committee, and committee leadership. He disclosed that six committees were formed out of the previous two to enhance quality oversight.

The committee’s primary focus, according to Fulata, is to ensure quality, reliable, easily accessible, and rewarding university education.

Acknowledging the current challenges facing university education, he highlighted issues such as strikes, cultism, insecurity, drug peddling, and immoral acts.

“It is unfortunate that university education today is facing serious challenges,” Fulata remarked, underscoring the necessity for collective efforts to address these issues.

The committee aims to intervene and welcomes contributions from all well-meaning Nigerians to overcome these challenges.

Acting Executive Secretary of the National University Commission, Prof. Chris Maiyaki, acknowledged the numerous challenges confronting Nigerian universities.

He expressed confidence that with the commitment of the National Assembly, some of these problems could be effectively addressed.

Speaking on behalf of the vice-chancellors, Prof Folasade Ogunsola conveyed the belief that Nigerian universities possess the potential to emerge as the best in Africa.
