The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its intent to contest the recent ruling by the Appeal Court, which upheld Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the March 18 gubernatorial election.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos, Hakeem Amode, the PDP Publicity Secretary in Lagos, revealed the party’s decision to pursue further legal recourse.

Amode expressed dissatisfaction with the Appeal Court’s judgment, asserting that justice had not been adequately served in the petitions brought forward by the PDP’s governorship candidate, Olajide Adediran.

“We are taking our case to the Supreme Court to challenge the Appeal Court’s ruling affirming Sanwo-Olu as the winner. Our petitions will reach the Supreme Court in the coming days,” stated Amode, highlighting the party’s confidence in the apex court’s ability to address the crucial aspects of the matter.

The PDP spokesperson criticized what he perceived as inconsistencies in the Appeal Court’s decisions on pre-election matters and underscored the party’s commitment to seeking justice despite setbacks at lower courts.

The pivotal reasons for the PDP’s decision to escalate the legal battle to the Supreme Court were the Appeal Court’s dismissal of Adediran’s 34 grounds of appeal and its stance on the qualification of Governor Sanwo-Olu and his deputy.

Previously, both the election tribunal and the Appeal Court had rejected petitions filed by Adediran and the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Viviour, challenging Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the gubernatorial election.

With a 14-day window from the date of the Appeal Court’s ruling to file the appeal at the Supreme Court, the PDP is gearing up for another legal chapter. Subsequently, the Supreme Court will have 60 days to review the case and issue a final judgment.
