Omoyele Sowore, the #RevolutionNow convener, has expressed his reservations about the attitude of young Nigerians towards challenging the older generation for key political positions. This comes in the wake of 44-year-old Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s inauguration as the Senegalese president, which has been celebrated by many as a milestone for youth leadership.

Sowore, who contested in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections under the African Action Congress (AAC) party, cautioned against premature celebrations of Faye’s political achievement. He emphasized that youthfulness alone is not a sufficient criterion for effective leadership, especially considering the failures of some young leaders in Nigeria.

While acknowledging the need for fresh perspectives in leadership, Sowore stressed the importance of vision, motivation, and a commitment to serve the people. He cited instances where young leaders in Nigeria had disappointed, urging caution in idealizing youth leadership.

Sowore highlighted the significance of political participation and the establishment of untainted political parties as crucial steps towards meaningful change. He called on Nigerian youths to aspire to leadership positions with a genuine desire to make a positive impact, rather than seeking personal gains or affiliations with the older political class.

Despite acknowledging the importance of experience, Sowore argued that it should not be used as a barrier to young people seeking leadership roles. He emphasized the need for leaders of character, vision, and a dedication to work for the people.

He also criticized the tendency of some young Nigerians to pursue positions as Special Assistants to politicians, rather than aspiring to higher leadership roles. Sowore urged young people to be driven by a desire to replace the old guard with new ideas and fresh perspectives.

Sowore called on Nigerian youths to be proactive in taking over leadership from the older generation, emphasizing the importance of being alert, responsive, and capable leaders. He cautioned against complacency and urged young people to seize the opportunity to lead with purpose and vision.
