Nigeria’s Minister of Youth Development, Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim, has cautioned young people in the country against resorting to criminal activities due to the economic challenges facing the nation.

Speaking at a Retreat and Leadership Training Course for principal officers of the Peace Corps of Nigeria in Abuja, the Minister emphasized that the current economic downturn is a global issue and should not be used as an excuse for engaging in criminal behavior.

Represented by Mr Isaac Adeyinka Adeagbo, the Chief Youth Development Officer of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Dr Ibrahim urged youths to remain focused and use the economic challenges as an opportunity to prepare themselves for social and economic responsibilities.

She commended the Peace Corps of Nigeria for organizing the retreat and pledged the Ministry’s continuous support for youth development organizations in the country.

Highlighting the importance of peace for development, Dr Ibrahim called on all Nigerians to promote peace in their communities, stating that peace and security are essential for meaningful development.

Echoing similar sentiments, the National Commandant of the Corps, Dr Dickson Ameh Akoh, appealed to the federal government to create more opportunities for youths to contribute to the nation’s development.

He also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assent to the Nigeria Peace Corps Establishment Bill when passed by the National Assembly, describing it as a significant gesture towards youth empowerment.

Meanwhile, the District Head of Gwarinpa, Umaru Bayero, urged the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Nigeria Peace Corps Bill and transmit it to the President for approval, which would officially establish the Peace Corps of Nigeria as a statutory body.
