Efforts are underway to secure the release of the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, according to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. Kalu revealed that while court processes continue, political solutions are being pursued behind the scenes.

During a special edition of “The Ben Kalu’s Mandate” radio programme on FLO FM, Umuahia, Abia State, Kalu clarified that the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), an initiative he launched to address security challenges in the South East, has reconciliation efforts in its agenda, including a focus on Nnamdi Kanu’s role in the peace process.

Kalu emphasized his commitment to lobbying for Kanu’s release, stating, “I have always told people that I will never deny Nnamdi Kanu. He’s my brother. We come from the same place, and I will never be happy having him incarcerated when we can have him out and increase our pursuit towards peace.”

He also hinted at a possible visit by Igbo elders to engage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on issues affecting the South East, while calling for support for Tinubu’s administration.

Regarding the South East Development Commission Bill, Kalu mentioned that it is at the conference committee stage, where issues regarding the confirmation of commissioners are being resolved. He expressed confidence that the bill will be assented to by the president, whom he described as “peace-loving” and interested in making a positive impact in Igbo land.
