The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has hailed the country’s legislative arm as a beacon of transparency and accountability, attracting admiration from the international community and development partners worldwide.

Speaking to reporters upon his return from South Africa after the Pan-African Parliament’s Extraordinary Session, Agbese highlighted the House’s commitment to transparency, citizen participation, and accountability, which has garnered attention from other nations.

Agbese praised the leadership of Rt Hon Tajudeen Abbas, noting that under his stewardship, the House has made legislative information easily accessible. The implementation of mechanisms for public participation and accountability has fostered an open and trusting relationship with citizens.

He emphasized that the House, while holding the executive accountable, has proactively provided information related to parliamentary operations, lawmakers’ details, meeting agendas, bills, debates, and voting records.

Agbese expressed optimism about the changing perception of Nigeria’s legislature in the international community, citing commendations received at the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly for the National Assembly’s diplomatic efforts.

He shared his surprise at the positive views of Nigerian lawmakers expressed by his African counterparts at the Pan-African Parliament’s extraordinary congress. According to Agbese, the Nigerian House of Representatives, under Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D., is highly regarded for its transparency, citizen participation, and accountability.

Agbese attributed this positive perception to the House’s proactive steps, including consultations, public hearings, and strengthened communication with constituents. He also highlighted the inclusion of civil society groups in the legislative process as a key factor in enhancing transparency and citizen engagement.

Agbese called on Nigerians to take pride in their House of Representatives, noting that the international community is increasingly recognizing its efforts towards transparency and accountability.
