The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intensified efforts to track down illegal miners in Borno State who continue to operate despite a government ban on mining activities in the state. Farouq Musa-Boyi, the NSCDC Commandant in Borno, revealed in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the majority of these illegal activities are concentrated in Bayo Local Government Area, leading to significant environmental degradation.

Musa-Boyi highlighted the abundant mineral resources in Borno, including Feldspar, Limestone, Kaolin, Potash, Iron-Ore, Quartz, Magnetite, Diatomite, Trona, Mica, Silica Sand, Gypsum, Granite, Flutters Earth, and Uranium. Despite the state government’s ban and warnings of severe consequences for violators, illegal miners have continued to exploit these resources unchecked.

He emphasized the NSCDC’s determination to crack down on these offenders and ensure they face the full weight of the law. The commandant’s statement underscores the seriousness with which the NSCDC views the issue of illegal mining and its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s natural resources.
