After a six-year hiatus, Nigerian carrier Air Peace has reactivated the bilateral air service agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the United Kingdom by launching a direct flight to London. The inaugural flight, which landed at London Gatwick, was met with widespread applause and jubilation, with the federal government pledging its support to the airline.

The launch of Air Peace’s direct flight to London marks a significant development in the aviation sector, as it provides Nigerian travellers with a more convenient and affordable option for travelling to the UK. Previously, the Nigeria-London route was dominated by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, with other Nigerian carriers suspending their operations on the route.

The entry of Air Peace into the route has led to a reduction in fares, making travel more accessible for Nigerians. The federal government has expressed its commitment to supporting the airline to ensure its success on the route.

Speaking on the significance of Air Peace’s flight to London, the Minister of Aviation highlighted that it would not only reduce fares but also strengthen the naira, as the airline would not be reliant on foreign exchange to repatriate funds. He reiterated the government’s policy of supporting indigenous carriers to thrive.

Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema, emphasized that the London route is just the beginning of the airline’s international expansion plans. He pointed out that Air Peace already operates flights to China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, India, and several regional routes, demonstrating its capacity and reliability in the aviation industry.

The launch of Air Peace’s direct flight to London represents a significant milestone for the airline and the Nigerian aviation sector, offering travellers more options and improving connectivity between Nigeria and the UK.
