Activist and media entrepreneur Omoyele Sowore has strongly criticized the Nigerian Senate, describing it as a “coven of thieves” and a “retirement home of chronic liars, never-do-wells, and corrupt former governors.” Sowore, who was the African Action Congress presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, made these remarks in response to revelations of budget padding in the Senate.

In a statement, Sowore expressed his dissatisfaction with the alleged allocation of N500 million each to “senior senators” in the 2024 budget. He called for the abolition of the bi-cameral legislative system in Nigeria, particularly targeting the Senate, which he believes embodies corruption and inefficiency.

Sowore argued for the establishment of a unicameral legislative arm with no more than 100 part-time lawmakers. He believes that such a system would be more effective and transparent, reducing the opportunities for corruption and mismanagement that he associates with the current Senate.

The activist’s comments have sparked debate about the structure and function of the Nigerian legislature, with some supporting his call for reform while others defend the current system. Critics of the Senate point to its high cost, perceived inefficiency, and susceptibility to corruption as reasons for reform.

However, supporters of the Senate argue that the bi-cameral system provides checks and balances and ensures representation for diverse interests across Nigeria’s regions. They contend that abolishing the Senate would weaken the legislative process and centralize power, potentially leading to a less democratic system of governance.
