Senate Advocates Increased Police Recruitment to Tackle Kidnappings

The Senate has called for the recruitment of more police personnel to strengthen security forces’ capacity in combating kidnappings and other criminal activities. This resolution followed the adoption of a motion titled “Galadimawa Kidnap Incident Response and Need to Urgently Enhance Security Measures in FCT, Nigeria,” sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko (PDP-Delta) during plenary.

Senator Nwoko highlighted the need for improved security measures following the tragic abduction of 19 persons, including his senior legislative aide, Chris Agidy, in Galadimawa, Abuja. Prompt action by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, led to the successful rescue operation on February 24, where a notorious kidnap kingpin, Samaila Wakili Fafa, was apprehended in Nasarawa State.

Expressing concern over the situation, Senator Nwoko noted the untimely demise of Mr Agidy and others in the hands of the abductors. Their remains were recovered and deposited at Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital mortuary for assessment.

The Senate commended the efforts of the security forces, including the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the FCT Commissioner of Police, for their dedication in pursuing the kidnappers. Senator Oyewunmi Olalere (PDP-Osun) emphasized the importance of implementing the Senate’s resolutions to curb security challenges in the FCT and across Nigeria.

In response, the Senate urged the Inspector-General of Police to increase security patrols and surveillance in Abuja and nationwide to prevent further kidnappings. The call for more police recruitment aims to bolster the security forces’ capacity and enhance their ability to combat criminal activities effectively.
