Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, has issued an apology to state governors for his recent comments regarding the alleged payment of N30 billion hardship allowance to them from the federation account. Akpabio’s remarks, made during last Tuesday’s plenary, were based on what he now acknowledges as an “unverified report.”

In a statement titled “N30bn to State Governors from Unverified Report: I Hold Governors in High Esteem – Akpabio,” signed by his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio expressed regret for relying on unverified information and apologized to the governors. He affirmed his respect for the governors and acknowledged their role as valuable stakeholders in various legislative engagements.

The statement clarified that Akpabio’s comments were not intended to cast aspersions on the governors but were rather meant to urge state governments to collaborate with the federal government to mitigate the prevailing economic situation in the country.

Akpabio emphasized that state governments are functional partners in all the efforts of the current administration and valuable stakeholders in legislative engagements. He called on state governments not to be distracted by any misunderstanding of his comments but to continue their efforts to ameliorate the adverse effects of the current economic environment.

The Senate President’s apology comes after denials from governors and public outcry over his initial comments. Akpabio’s willingness to acknowledge his mistake and apologize demonstrates his commitment to team building and fostering positive relationships with state governments.
