Governor Accuses Senate President of Spreading False Information about Claim of N30 Billion to States

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has refuted claims by Senate President Godswill Akpabio that state governors received N30 billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to mitigate inflation and the high cost of living. Governor Makinde made this statement during the commissioning of a multi-billion naira Central Mosque in Iseyin, Oyo State.

According to Governor Makinde, the comments made by the Senate President were an attempt to politicize the country’s worsening economic situation and shift blame onto state governors. He emphasized that now is not the time for political games, as there are real issues that require genuine solutions.

The governor, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, clarified that the federal government had only released N2 billion to each state as part of the N5 billion loan offered to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal. He stressed that FIRS cannot give money to states, as all revenues go into the federation account and are distributed to all tiers of government.

Expressing disappointment in the Senate President, Governor Makinde criticized him for quoting unverified reports, especially as a leader in the country. He emphasized the need for leaders to engage with the people and listen to their feedback to address policy shortcomings.

Regarding the N2 billion palliative from the federal government, Governor Makinde noted that the government is now requesting repayment of the funds. He called for unity among leaders to solve the country’s problems, stating that hunger and anger are real issues that must be addressed.
