The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leaders have criticized the Department of State Services (DSS) for warning against their planned protest scheduled for February 27 and 28. The DSS had advised the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their decision, citing concerns for peace across the country.

In response, NLC President Joe Ajaero rebuffed the DSS’s warning, stating that the agency should not attempt to blackmail the organized Labour. He emphasized that the protest aims to address the current hardships faced by Nigerians due to the high cost of living and the government’s perceived nonchalant attitude.

Ajaero expressed the view that history would not forgive the Labour movement if it remained passive while Nigerians suffered. He emphasized that the planned protest is intended to be peaceful, highlighting the Labour movement’s track record of peaceful demonstrations.

The NLC president criticized the DSS for assuming the role of the government’s chief spokesperson and expressed concern over the agency’s allegations of planned violence during the protest. He reiterated that the protest is a peaceful means to draw attention to the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

Ajaero also questioned the DSS’s failure to arrest individuals allegedly planning to disrupt the protest, despite being aware of their activities. He emphasized that the protest is not intended to compromise the country’s sovereignty or security but rather to advocate for the welfare of Nigerians.

In conclusion, Ajaero reaffirmed the Labour Congress’ commitment to peaceful protest and criticized the DSS’s attempt to discourage their planned action. He stated that the protest is a response to the unbearable cost of living, affecting even the personnel of the DSS, and that the Labour Congress cannot remain silent in the face of such challenges.
