Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele has threatened legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio for defamation of character. Emefiele’s legal team has demanded N25 billion in damages if Akpabio fails to apologize for his alleged false and damaging statements.

The issue arose from a video where Akpabio reportedly made statements implying that Emefiele was responsible for Nigeria’s economic hardship. Emefiele’s legal team, in a letter dated February 19, 2024, described the comments as false, distorted, and aimed at tarnishing Emefiele’s image.

Akpabio had allegedly stated that the government was unsure what charges to bring against Emefiele, suggesting that the former CBN governor was responsible for the economic challenges in Nigeria. Emefiele’s legal team refuted these claims, emphasizing that Emefiele has been charged and is currently defending himself in court.

The letter also criticized Akpabio for making statements that are sub-judice, as they undermine the integrity and independence of the court. Emefiele’s legal team demanded an immediate retraction of the statement and an unreserved written apology, along with a compensation of N25 billion for the damage to Emefiele’s reputation.

The letter warned that failure to comply with these demands would result in Emefiele seeking redress through legal means. It emphasized that the false allegations have caused Emefiele great pain and embarrassment, lowering his esteem in society.

Emefiele’s legal team concluded the letter by urging Akpabio to comply with their demands and expressing hope for a resolution to the matter.
