The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has been arrested by Nigerian Police Force operatives in Edo State, alongside four others, on charges including attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms.

Tijani Momoh, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 5, which covers Edo and Delta states, confirmed the arrests, stating that they were made following a petition by the party’s Youth Leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia.

In the petition addressed to the Edo State Commissioner of Police and dated February 13, Aphimia alleged that he was attacked by some party members in December 2023. The petition detailed the events leading up to the attack, including his arrival in Benin City Airport as part of an official delegation and subsequent lodging at a hotel where he was ambushed by a mob.

Momoh explained that the arrests were made based on a written petition endorsed by the AIG Zone 5 from the office of the Inspector General of Police. He stated that video clips and recordings supported the petitioner’s claim of being assaulted and beaten upon returning home last year to conduct ward matters.

The spokesperson revealed that the suspects were found in possession of firearms, including a shotgun and three rounds of ammunition, leading to charges of attempted murder, conspiracy, illegal possession of arms, and other related offences.

Despite the arrests, the investigation into the matter is still ongoing, with authorities aiming to uncover more details about the incident and establish accountability.
