Two gubernatorial aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lucky Imasuen and Dr. Ernest Afolabi, have announced their withdrawal from the governorship race midway through the party’s primary. The duo cited the zoning of the governorship ticket to the Central senatorial district by the national leadership of the party as the reason for their withdrawal.

Imasuen, a former deputy governor of Edo State, stated in a press release that the party had indicated a preference for the Edo Central senatorial district. He expressed his decision to withdraw from the primaries scheduled for February 17, 2024, in the interest of peace and unity within the party.

Similarly, Dr. Umakhihe, in a separate statement, explained that he was stepping down from the race to promote peace and unity within the party. He emphasized that, given the current circumstances, continuing his campaign was not viable, and he was ready to support any candidate chosen by the party.

Both aspirants expressed their commitment to the APC and its ideals, despite their withdrawal from the race. Their decisions highlight the complexities and dynamics involved in party politics, particularly concerning issues such as zoning and party unity.
