The Nigerian government has decided to drop its case against Omoyele Sowore, the initiator of the #RevolutionNow movement, regarding alleged treason. The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), signed a Notice of Discontinuance, which was stamped by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Sahara Reporters reported that the notice indicated the Federal Government of Nigeria’s intention to discontinue the case against Sowore. This decision comes after Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, threatened to dismiss the treason charge if the government was not prepared to proceed with the case, which has been ongoing for five years.

The court had adjourned the case to April 15, 2024, and warned the prosecution to either produce the second defendant or proceed with the prosecution of the first defendant. Sowore, a presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, has faced charges related to his activism and advocacy for good governance in Nigeria.
