Abdul Ningi, the chairman of the Senate committee on national identity and population, has affirmed that the 2024 National Census will proceed as planned. This assurance was given during the screening of 17 out of the 19 National Population Commission (NPC) National Commissioner nominees in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ningi noted that most of the nominees were seeking reappointment for a second term, and their credentials were thoroughly reviewed. He emphasized the importance of conducting censuses, stating that Nigeria had not conducted a population census in the last 11 years.

According to Ningi, conducting censuses requires political will from the government. He highlighted the need for the President’s declaration of the census date, as it would attract international support and funding. He also mentioned that 75% of the logistics, including machines and personnel training, for the census have been completed.

However, Ningi stressed that without the President’s commitment, the census cannot proceed, and he urged the nominees to understand the significance of their assignment. He emphasized that the census is essential for planning and development, as it provides vital demographic data for policymaking.

During the screening, the chairman of the NPC, Nasir Kwarra, and 17 nominees were present, while two nominees were absent due to other appointments. The nominees expressed their gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to contribute their best to ensure a successful census.
