YPP Gubernatorial Candidate Joins APC Fold
The gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Akwa Ibom State, Bassey Albert, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). It is reported that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and 10 senators are set to welcome Albert into the APC today, Friday, January 19.
Sources reveal that the event will take place in Akpabio’s hometown, Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom. According to a source, the senators are already in town, lodging at a hotel in Ikot Ekpene. Akpabio reportedly met with Albert and his supporters who are defecting to the APC.
The move is said to be in line with a directive from Bola Tinubu, a prominent figure in the APC. The chairperson of Albert’s governorship campaign council’s contact and mobilisation committee, Daniel Udoh, has also confirmed the development.
Albert had contested in the 2023 governorship election but lost to Governor Umo Eno, who ran under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite legal efforts to challenge Governor Eno’s victory, Albert was unsuccessful in overturning the election results.
