The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has provided an explanation for the relocation of its headquarters from Abuja to Lagos State. According to Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the decision was made following consultations with stakeholders and unions to ensure the best interests of the authority and the country.

Mrs. Orah stated that the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, directed the relocation to prevent the waste of public resources and misuse of public funds. She highlighted that 60% of FAAN’s operations are conducted in Lagos and emphasized the lack of adequate office space in Abuja for the agency’s headquarters.

The statement revealed that those affected by the relocation have returned to Lagos due to the absence of office space in Abuja. Mrs. Orah pointed out that it was impractical to move the headquarters to Abuja without proper infrastructure in place. She emphasized the Minister’s commitment to preventing the misuse of public funds by stopping unnecessary expenses such as duty tour allowances for staff working out of station.

Additionally, the statement clarified that FAAN’s operations in Abuja remain unaffected, with full operational offices continuing to function. Plans are underway to engage concessionaires to construct suitable offices for the authority in both Lagos and Abuja. Until then, FAAN will manage its existing building in Lagos to accommodate its directors and senior officials.

The statement assured the public that FAAN is committed to acting in the best interest of the country and its citizens. It emphasized the Minister’s dedication to making decisions that prioritize the prudent use of public funds, irrespective of ethnic or sectional sentiments.
