Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, urged the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, to surrender himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during a thanksgiving service held in Makurdi. Ortom emphasized that evading the EFCC’s invitation and attempting to flee would bring disgrace to former governors. He urged Bello to comply with the investigation and clarify any issues concerning his tenure.

Ortom’s advice came after the EFCC filed 19 criminal counts of money laundering amounting to N80.246 billion against Bello and others. Ortom stressed the importance of accountability, stating that everyone, including former governors, should cooperate with law enforcement agencies. He encouraged Bello to face the EFCC and address any inquiries, emphasizing the importance of respecting the law.

Bello’s response to the situation was not immediately clear, as Ortom expressed difficulty in reaching him. However, he praised his former appointees for celebrating his 63rd birthday, acknowledging that the gesture might prompt him to emerge from his seclusion. Reflecting on his own experience as a governor, Bello highlighted the challenges and restrictions imposed by security details, likening the experience to living as a prisoner.

Ortom also emphasized the need for prayers for leaders, acknowledging that mistakes are inevitable due to human imperfection. Meanwhile, reports emerged of Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State allegedly aiding Bello’s escape from EFCC operatives who laid siege to his residence. The EFCC condemned such obstruction of justice and vowed to bring Bello to justice.

Despite the resistance faced by EFCC operatives during the attempted arrest of Bello, the agency remained committed to upholding the law and ensuring accountability. The EFCC warned against any further obstruction of its operations, asserting that Bello is not above the law and would face justice in due course.

In summary, Ortom’s advice to Bello underscores the importance of accountability and cooperation with law enforcement agencies. The EFCC’s pursuit of justice in Bello’s case highlights the agency’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, despite obstacles encountered during its operations.
