Former Governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced plans to revisit the creation of the five emirate councils in Kano State. This decision comes after the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, divided the Kano emirate into five following the dethronement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Kwankwaso, who is also the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which Sanusi’s removal was handled, describing it as a decision made in bad faith. He stated that the NNPP government would review the situation to rectify any perceived wrongs.

The call for the removal of the five first-class monarchs, including the late Emir’s two sons, gained momentum after the Supreme Court affirmed the election of Abba Yusuf as Kano governor. Kwankwaso emphasized that the decision to revisit the emirate councils’ creation would be thoroughly discussed to determine the appropriate course of action.

During an interactive session with select broadcast media, Kwankwaso indicated that while he had not yet been formally consulted on the matter, it would be addressed in due course. He highlighted the need to reassess the situation, considering the potential impact of the emirate councils’ creation on the state.

Governor Yusuf has publicly affirmed his allegiance to Kwankwaso, stating that his administration is an extension of Kwankwaso’s government. This assertion underscores the political influence and significance of Kwankwaso within the political landscape of Kano State.

Controversy surrounds the issue, with Kwankwaso’s declaration sparking debates about the implications of revisiting the emirate councils’ creation. The potential reversal of Ganduje’s decision could have far-reaching consequences for the traditional leadership structure in Kano State.
