Tragedy struck in Anambra State as two policemen were shot dead by suspected assailants at Uga roundabout in Aguata Local Government Area. The gunmen, allegedly on a kidnap mission, were operating in the area when they encountered a team of policemen attached to a motorcade. Unaware of the presence of the armed men, the policemen attempted to clear a gridlock, prompting the assailants to open fire, resulting in the deaths of two officers.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators. According to the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra Command, DSP Toochulwu Ikenga, the assailants were dressed in military camouflage. He added that a police-led mobile Forward Operating Base, which had been actively patrolling the area during the Christmas celebrations, promptly responded to the scene of the incident.

During the confrontation, the police recovered a Lexus SUV used by the gunmen, as well as an AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the slain officers. Additionally, an improvised explosive device found in the vehicle was safely defused. Mr. Ikenga stated that the assailants fled the scene after a shootout with the responding officers.

Despite the tragic loss, Commissioner Adeoye has commended the officers for their dedication and urged them to remain vigilant. He emphasized the command’s commitment to using technology to track down the criminals responsible for the attack. Adeoye also extended condolences to the families of the deceased officers and assured them that their sacrifice would not be in vain.

In light of the incident, the Commissioner called for calm among the residents of Anambra State, urging them not to be discouraged by the attack but to continue with their planned activities for the festive season.
