Nnamdi Kanu Sees New Opportunity After Supreme Court Ruling
Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has indicated that the recent Supreme Court judgment has created a new legal avenue for his potential release. Kanu shared this insight during a regular meeting with his legal team, led by his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and Barrister Nnaemeka, at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.
Despite expressing disappointment with the judgment, Kanu remains optimistic about the possibilities it presents for his case. A statement by Ejimakor on X confirmed Kanu’s sentiments, emphasizing that while Kanu is disappointed with the outcome, he believes that certain aspects of the judgment could lead to a new legal strategy for securing his release. Ejimakor urged supporters to maintain confidence in the ongoing legal process.
The Supreme Court recently declined an appeal seeking Kanu’s release from detention. In a judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim but written by Justice Garba Lawal, the court overturned the Appeal Court’s ruling that had acquitted Kanu of all terrorism charges in October 2022.
The Supreme Court’s decision emphasized that despite the Nigerian government’s actions in unlawfully extraditing Kanu from Kenya, this act did not preclude the courts from proceeding with the trial. Justice Lawal emphasized that the lawsuit seeking Kanu’s release did not cite any specific Nigerian laws related to his abduction from Kenya.
