Following ongoing protests, the Alliance of Nigerian Students Against Neo-Liberal Attacks (ANSA) is gearing up for a nationwide mobilization to shut down the University of Ibadan (UI) in response to rising tuition fees. The student body accuses the university management, as well as state and federal governments, of neglecting their legitimate demands.ANSA has called for the support of various organizations, including ASUU, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and civil society groups, urging them to unite against the commercialization of education. In a joint memo, ANSA’s leadership declared education a fundamental right and condemned its privatization. The students are demanding a complete reversal of the fee hike, increased bursary and scholarship opportunities, enhanced government investment in public education, and the restoration of authentic student unionism. They warn that failure to address these issues will lead to further escalations, including boycotts of upcoming examinations.ANSA has emphasized the urgency of their situation, stating, “The state and federal governments must recognize that education is a public good, not a private commodity.” They have urged community support, warning that their peaceful protests could escalate into more disruptive actions if their demands are not met promptly. As tensions rise on campuses, ANSA’s initiative is gathering momentum, marking a critical moment in the fight for educational reforms in Nigeria.
